SUMMARY

The origin of Botanical Species which made up part of the diet of ancient Chileans. Description of over 200 vegetable foodstuffs eaten by our ancestors, who were able to recognize them through observation and experimentation.

The sources of this research spring from ethnic history, ethnic botany, anthropological and archeological studies as well as from historical chronicles, the semantic analysis of indigenous terms and from customs still alive in rural areas.

The species are presented showing their vernacular name or names, with their scientific nomenclature, their territorial presence and the historical or cultural references that tell of their use.
