SUMMARY

The aim of this book is to bring to light an issue which has been concealed under a conspiracy in the form of a fearsome plot by seemingly opposing political forces: the Concertacion parties and political right. In the concealment of the “Dark side of the democratic transition” the role of the mass media was crucial, collaborating in making public opinion ignorant about the issues here presented and by influencing people against stopping an unjust situation.

¿What political interest brought together such different parties, with the aim of erasing from memory a group of people, concealing them behind lies and the walls of a jail?

This research is divided into five chapters: first, a brief historical summary of the political inoculation carried out by the Concertacion governments, particularly that of Aylwin. Then, the concept of political prisoner is explained as opposed to the concept of “terrorist”. Next, the construction of the CAS (HIGH SECURITY PRISON) and the relocation to it of political prisoners is discussed. After this follows a chapter about the escape of four members of the FPMR – at the end of 1996 – which brings to the fore the existence of political prisoners under the Concertacion governments. Finally, the achievements and drawbacks in the struggle for their freedom are analyzed.
